IMC USA has published a handbook, How to Hire a Management Consultant and Get the Results You Expect, which is available as a free download in both Commercial and Government versions.

A Certified Management Consultant (CMC) in your area may be available to provide an in-house workshop based on The How to Hire Guide. The workshop lasts anywhere from 30 minutes to 3 hours depending on your needs. This workshop may be especially useful to Chambers of Commerce, Boards of Trade, procurement officials, industry groups, or business leagues whose members would like to use management consultants more effectively.
