For those who attended last Wednesday's forum, it was an extremely informative session. Hiring executives from ING, Erikson and Grady Health Systems answered questions on how, why and when they hired consultants. They produced a list of "to do's" as well as "not to do's".
When asked about how can a consultant get noticed, all three enforced the importance of learning about the organization and their current problems first. "Too many consultants come in and tell us of all the wonderful things they can do. The problem is that none of their skills are directly related to our current problems," stated Doug Matheson, VP of Marketing & Business Development at Erikson. "Consultants should know precisely how they can help us with a current problem."
"Send in a white paper the addresses how you've solved a similar problem also works," added Mark Kirby, Head of Corporate Advertising and Brand Strategy at ING. "Be patient, keep getting your name in front of us, and continue to send us stuff. As a consultant, you need to build your brand individually to get known," he added.
In addition to the panelists, about twenty people were in attendance.

I would really like to hear from Georgia Chapter members on what they would like to see on the Georgia portion of the IMC site. Take a look at some of the other chapter sites, particularly PNW and NJ.

Fourteen consultants braved the rainy weather Wednesday night to seek help from seasoned consultants Judy Suiter, CMC, Jim Rodgers, CMC, and Stan Sloan, CMC. The format was opened ended, and I came prepared with several questions that had been troubling me.
Judy Suite provided several excellent sources for the information that that I had been seeking. Additionally, Judy was showing off her new technology toy, Live Scribe. It's a writing instrument, it's an optical scanner, and it's a recording device. When Judy returns home, she downloads the information into her computer and whiz bang golly man, everything is transcribed. At a price of $190, I need to get one!
Earlier in the day, Jim Rodgers led his very interactive and informative workshop on how to apply the IMC Code of Ethics in real world situations.
Caty, our marketing intern, and yours truly won the door prizes, business books donated by Stan Sloan's publisher friend.

January Breakfast Meeting, Perimeter Garden Hilton - Eighteen members and guests participated in an interactive discussion led by Lisa Dugan, Vistage chair and executive coach for Bixler International. Differences between coaching and consulting were discussed, and personal attributes of what makes a good coach were outlined. Lisa also talked about what to do to increase one's business given the current state of the economy, and challenged the audience to try new and different things to grow their practices in 2009. The discussion was well received. Pre-breakfast and post-breakfast networking also seemed to produce several meaningful connections.
Next event: Friday, February 20. Membership Drive Breakfast. Speakers: Drumm McNaughton, CMC, Chairman and CEO of IMC USA, and Jim Rodgers, CMC, President of Rodgers & Associates.
All breakfast and dinner events through June will be held at the Perimeter Garden Hilton Inn.
