The past four years have not been the best for many companies, especially smaller ones. In the start up world, statistics are clear. In spite of hype, traction has been difficult, and the die off has been severe. In addition, many companies sacrifice value in the market in the hope that a miracle will occur when an early exit would capture at least some value.
IMC members are actually better positioned than many other professionals to identify potential value in a company, and capture it. We've been looking at value creation systematically using the VRIO model. Value is a firm's ability to exploit its resources and deal with threats. Rarity means that not many other firms have it. Imitabilty refers to how easy it is to imitate. And Organization...well we know what that is. The firm has the structure and infrastructure to get the job done.
These are concrete factors that can be used to increase a client's strength and profitability, or it can be used to engineer an early exit if that seems like a useful strategic move. Please let me know if you want to know more. Thanks Chuck Roxin

Have you considered the CMC (Certified Management Consultant) certification? Have you already achieved it? To many members, the process for achieving the CMC is a mystery. Certification as a management consultant is a way for clients to know whether a management consultant has a certified level of proficiency. But what does it take to become certified? I joined IMC Pacific Northwest Chapter in November 2010, and now that I have been a member for a little over a year, I am interested in learning more about certification as a CMC. I recently talked with one of our longtime board members, Margaret Dorchester, who is a CMC, about the process. In the next few months, I'll be learning about certification, about the required tasks and educational objectives. If you are a new member, or if you have been considering CMC certification, you may wish to know more about the process too! I'll be posting updates about what I learn, so you can continue to decide if you would like to pursue certification yourself. And we may have a chance to hear from those who have completed the certification process about their successes as well. Here's to a productive 2012!

Our January breakfast meeting program featured Dan Weedin of Toro Consulting, Master Mentor, who was trained by Alan Weiss of Summit Consulting. Dan shared several insights into growing your management consulting business, including - have a value proposition of 10 words or less, stating how your clients can expect to benefit from working with you
- use value-based fees and always present 3 options
- Be Confident!
- understand people; use knowledge of decision styles (e.g., driver, analytic, expressive and amiable) to build trust with your client
- realize "This is the Marketing Business" -- devote 40% of your time to marketing, including speaking, self-publishing, writing, press releases, pro bono work, netowrking, websites and podcasts, social media, etc.
One of Dan's fun suggestions was to find a colleague who can hold you accountable to your goals -- and check in with that colleague regularly (once a week or once a month) to report on your progress. That will move you forward immensely! Don't forget -- every month the 3rd Friday is the Mercer Island Roundtable event at the Mercer Island Community Center. A perfect opportunity to network and learn new tips for success!

Did you know? The most powerful way to attract and make consulting sales is through building trust with the client, not by telling the client how smart you are or what the solution is to their problem.
Four principles of trust-based selling to develop the trust relationship with your client are: 1. Focus on the client's best interest even during the sales process 2. Don't sacrifice a long-term relationship for short-term wins 3. Put the collaborative aspect first over "selling the client" 4. Be as transparent as possible
Information on trust-based selling and many other essential aspects of consulting practice are readily accessible through your IMC membership. The above information was taken from "Create Trust, Gain a Client" in the Knowledge Library of the IMC USA website (Professional Learning -> Knowledge Library).
Thinking of renewing your IMC membership for 2012? Now is the time! Among your membership benefits you can access - Consultapalooza: bimonthly interviews with thought leaders in consulting - Daily Tips: short daily tips on improving your consulting practice - Knowledge Libraries: articles on consulting topics - Affiliate and Alliance discounts: reduced rates on insurance and tools for your practice
Don't wait! Join the 30+ members who have renewed in our Pacific Northwest Chapter for 2012!

Just a quick note to let you know about this week's IPC program, which
is exciting because we have Jim Hebert, who is a terrific speaker about
economic trends and relevant research findings. Hearing Jim speak is
what inspired me to join IMC last year, and we still have plenty of
space for attendees at this program. If you have time in your schedule
and you're interested, please feel free to visit the link below for a
full description and you can register through the IMC website. Of
course, you can also do a walk-in, but it does help our planning if we
have advance notice of attendance.
Hope to see you there! http://www.imcusa.org/events/event_details.asp?id=181335
IMC Pacific Northwest Chapter program, Wed. November 2, 2011
Join us in November to hear Jim Hebert presents his research findings
and economic outlook on the Puget Sound area and his "business
confidence index”. A veteran researcher and respected economic
advisor, Jim will present trends that
he’s shared with our area’s leading organizations. He’ll provide our
members with research facts and speak to the role management consultants
have in helping their clients manage through this economic time. Sign
up now as walk ins may be limited and consider
bringing a client!
