There is no question that the economy is forcing businesses large and small to stay on their toes? and sometimes throw in the towel. We see ?For Lease? signs around our towns where shops used to be and hear the news about corporate layoffs. But we also see new businesses popping up and hear about new product and service launches. Amongst this change, we have the baby boom generation entering or nearing retirement. The confluence of trends and demographics make for a dynamic business environment. Consultants of all types are helping businesses through this change.

Our group is affiliated with IMC (the Institute of Management Consultants) of Northern California, but IMC membership is not required for membership in this group.

Town Meets Gown

Join us for a stimulating conversation between real world consultants and academics who may also consult on the side. How do theory and practice inform one another? Where are there possible conflicts of interest? What possible opportunities are there for mutual learning and collaboration?

IMC member, entrepreneur, and Professor Brian McKenzie will facilitate this discussion at our monthly ABC. Besides serving on the IMC NorCal chapter board, Brian teaches entrepreneurship and marketing at Cal State University East Bay. Brian used to run a boat building company and more recently he has been effective at building human bridges. Some of us IMC members have had the privilege of serving as guest lecturers and mentors to CSUEB student consulting teams.

Please join co-hosts Brian and Marty Silberstein--owner of Night Owl Companion and marketing expert--at our Friday, April 16 breakfast meeting. Bring your delicious dilemmas, consulting practice and client issues to the table for input and support from your peers and for everyone to learn.

  • "GIVING IT AWAY: How to offer 'free samples' without giving away the store" recounts a discussion from our February meeting where breakfast groupies addressed the pro bono marketplace - with very different results!
  • "SEIZE YOUR FEES: a study in net present value" is a companion piece that reminds us that a check received today is worth more than that same check down the road. Our basic thesis is that some of the most sophisticated fee deferral schemes are also the most dangerous.

The breakfast group itself meets (almost) every month on the FOURTH (not necessarily the last) Monday of the monthat the intractably tasteful Lucky Penny Restaurant, Masonic at Geary Blvd, in San Francisco, California! We order off the menu and meet in (in)formal session from 7:30 til 9:00 a.m.(after which the restaurant management is perfectly cool to our hanging out for networking and one-2-one discussions).
