Posted By IMC Nor Cal, Tuesday, July 13, 2010
SAN FRANCISCO ABC UPCOMING EVENT

"Summertime, and the livin' gets sleazy ..."  Old American Folksong
While most ABCs take the summer off, it is with pride and pleasure that we announce the San Francisco Area Breakfast will continue to meet. We shall, as we do every summer, slog through the fog to our beloved LuckyPennyRestaurant, Masonic at Geary, 7:30 a.m. on the Fourth Monday (not necessarily the last) of the month: Monday July 26th and Monday August 23rd.
So! For those of you who tire of all that sunshine and lying around at poolside ... you who crave the company and companionship - and the intellectual stimulation of your fellow consultants - come to The City and break bread at the premier discussion group in the American management consulting community: The IMC's San Francisco ABC!

Blessings ~ Cox

Geoffrey Moore
"The Hierarchy of Powers: A Framework for Next-Generation Management Systems"

Wednesday, June 16, 2010
Registration opens at 7:15 am
7:30 am - 10:30am
Hilton Hotel- Burlingame, CA

Geoffrey Moore, Best-selling author of "Dealing with Darwin: How Great Companies Innovate at Every Phase of Their Evolution" is our guest speaker this June 16th.  Geoffrey says this will be a highly interactive time spent learning about the "hierarchy of powers" that organizations find themselves in. Even more compelling though, are Geoffrey's ideas on how companies handle themselves when they find they have moved out of place in the hierarchy.  Some may not even realize their power has shifted, and when they do, they don't have a clear path on decision making about how to resolve the issue.

Geoffrey will share with us the types of power that organizations are ranked in and a methodology for thinking through the decision making process to change that ranking.

Geoffrey Moore is a best-selling author, a Managing Director at TCG Advisors and a venture partner at Moore Davidow Ventures. Recognized as a leading business consultant to large companies facing formidable strategic challenges, Geoffrey works with established enterprises in his role of Managing Director of TCG Advisors. In this role, he divides his time between consulting on strategy and transformation challenges with senior executives and developing mental models to support the practice.

June East Bay ABC Event: The Psychology of Good Practice

Posted By Administration, Wednesday, June 09, 2010
EAST BAY
June 18 The Psychology of a Good Practice
Psychology: the study of the mind and how its functions affect behavior in given contexts; mental and emotional factors governing situations or activities.

In response to requests from EBCF members, seasoned certified management consultants Cox Ferrall CMC FIMC and Barbara Chan CMC, with over 48 years of combined experience, will facilitate a discussion about the psychology of running a good practice. Questions we'll explore:

How do you decide who to work with?
What makes a good client?
How does your mental and/or emotional state affect how you manage the consultant-client relationship?
What if clients are resistant to advice?
When do you fire a client?

Cox Ferrall:
An old sales dog who spent a quarter century helping businesses turn around, develop, and manage their sales programs, Cox is well-known for his sales wisdom and helping clients close the gap between marketing and sales. With great good humor, he's a member of the "Sales Dogs" and hosts the IMC NorCal San Francisco Area Breakfast for Consultants.

Clients hire Barbara to cultivate authentic, socially responsible leadership and collaborative organizations that get results. With extensive experience working with people from many countries and cultures, a stint as editor-in-chief of a high tech magazine, and educated in ecology and psychology, she is known for her whole systems approach to change.

IMC NorCal Board of Directors

Posted By Brett LaDove, Wednesday, May 19, 2010
It's that time of year again; when we scout our membership for next year's new board. As Chairman of the Nominating Committee I wanted to take this opportunity to tell you a bit more about our board.

We generally operate with 9 or 10 voting board members, and are supported by our administrator Lacy Taylor. Each board member generally heads a Committee. We meet monthly to discuss and vote on key matters, and most committees execute some activities between board meetings. Most of the roles are pretty self explanatory.

The 2009/2010 board:
  • Chairman - Brett LaDove
  • President - Jeff Thompson
  • Secretary - Lorre Zuppan
  • Marketing - Mike Levin
  • Programs - Bart Gragg
  • ABC Liaison - Luanne Stevenson
  • Membership - Brian McKenzie
  • Other positions are open
We've invested a lot of effort over the last few years, to build processes, and tools to support the work that we do. In my opinion, we've made several of the roles much more straight forward, and easier to pass forward from one Chair to the next.

The positions we currently have open for the 2010/11 board year are: Marketing, Programs, Sponsors/Affiliates, and Membership.

I'm glad to discuss many specifics of our board structure and functioning with any of our IMC members -- feel free to reach out.

Regards,

Brett LaDove
Chairman, IMC NorCal

Note From The President: Mid- April 2010

Posted By Administration, Wednesday, April 28, 2010
Dear IMC Norcal Members,

We are trying to get on a more regular schedule of communications with two
main communications each month:

1. On or around the 1st of each month we will send out a summary of all
the ABC meetings for the upcoming month
2. On or around the 15th of each month we will send out our monthly
newsletter with other information hopefully of interest to members.

The value of these newsletters is very dependent on input from all of you.
So, please feel free to send requests or suggestions for content to either
Lacy or me. I would like to keep the question of "what is appropriate for
the newsletter" open right now and see what sort of content gets proposed.
In general, I would like to use the newsletter to promote our events
(chapter events and ABC events), to promote any significant developments
at the IMC USA level, and to announce or promote any big news related to
specific members.

I realize we all likely receive too many monthly "newsletter" as it is, so
I am very interested in any feedback on how we can make the IMC Norcal
newsletter one of the newsletters that many of you actually read!

We have some interesting announcements included in this issue. And, we
are still working on some final details for our June event, but look for
specifics about that program shortly.

Finally, I do have one item to call out for any of you considering
attending Confab this year. The conference will once again be held at the
Silver Legacy hotel in Reno, Nevada from October 23rd through October
25th. Through May 1st you can enroll for $495 which includes a $100
discount. For more information, visit www.confabusa.org.

Regards,
Jeff Thompson

Opportunity for Consultants with your local Small Business Development Center

Posted By Administration, Wednesday, April 28, 2010
OPPORTUNITY FOR CONSULTANTS

There is an opportunity through your local Small Business Development Center to potentially make a little side money and help out small local businesses.

Most SBDC locations are open to and work with outside Consultants. Consultants will need to contact their local SBDC sites and speak with the Director to determine opportunities. Some sites have individuals work as part time employees but they are the minority.

Payment is typically $35 to $50 per hour. While it is certainly not the rate each of us works for or should be working for normally, it is an opportunity to help local small businesses be successful, build your resume and earn a little side money.

When you work with a client through SBDC, your work would remain through SBDC. SBDC is your client and SBDC pays you. Any work done would be through SBDC and there shouldn't be any expectation by the Consultant that they might have work downstream with that client at a higher rate. Their expectation should be that all work with that client would be through SBDC at the agreed upon rate.

If you are interested in exploring this further, go to http://norcalsbdc.org/findSBDCand contact your local SBDC site.

For questions or more information please contact Mike Levin.

Volunteer Your Services for Media Coverage!

Posted By Administration, Wednesday, April 28, 2010
Giving Back & Receive

Join fellow IMC members for a great cause! National Small Business Week is approaching fast (May 24-28, 2010) and in this current business environment what better way to give back and build your exposure than volunteering your time to answer questions for others trying to make it. And the added plus is, Michael Loschke is organizing media coverage of the event so you'll get media coverage on top of the great feelings of giving back!

So what is needed: willingness to donate 3 hours pro bono to monitoring phone calls and answering questions from small business owners. In return, participating members will be mentioned in a press release and media covereage.

Interested in volunteering? Please contact Michael Loschkevia e-mail at michael@imc-1.net

Free Professional Development Program

May 1st the National Speakers Association/Northern California (NSA/NC) is hosting a Free Professional Development program that I thought your organization might be interested in. The program will include well known speakers such as: Patricia Fripp, Rebecca Morgan, and Michael Soon Lee. All presentations are Free to attend, but registration is required.

Our sponsors are supporting the event by offering a fundraiser for the IMC clubs in the Bay Area. The first ten clubs that register 10 members (or guests) and attend the event will get a $50 check for the club. It can be real easy for your club to earn some extra money, and the event will provide a great learning experience too. When any of your members (or guests) register for the event, have them enter the letters "IMC" and your club name in the Promotion Code field. Again, the first ten clubs to get 10 registrations and attend the event will get a $50 check.
