Building a Consulting Firm Through Merger and Acquisition

Imagine growing your business from a profitable, cash-generating professional service firm into an attractive merger or acquisition candidate. What vision, goals and action steps would be required?

As independent consultants operating private practices, we are called upon to perform for our clients as consummate, professional subject matter experts. But as business persons, we must also think and plan as both business owners and entrepreneurs. Our firms are cash-flow vehicles that also possess potential for development as long term assets offering financial liquidity upon maturity of the business and/or our active consulting careers.

Oris Stuart, NCR’s featured guest on Thursday, June 11, will describe and discuss his inspiration, strategies, successes, pitfalls, and lessons learned in his journey from accomplished business professional, to independent consultant, to small firm executive, to large firm executive.  He has graciously agreed to share a rare insider’s view into a consultancy’s growth through strategic acquisition of complementary consulting firms to achieve critical mass leading to the profitable sale of the company to a venerated brand consultancy.

IMC NCR members are also invited to choose selections
from the Chapter’s member-donated management consulting
library free of charge the evening of this event.

Our Speaker

Recognized as a skilled and effective leader, strategist, and facilitator, Oris Stuart has assisted directors, chief executives, and other senior leaders in addressing talent, diversity, and inclusion challenges across Asia, Australia, Europe and North America in industries that include the life sciences, financial services, utilities, restaurants, retail, professional services, and healthcare.

In 2001, Oris assumed the duties of Chief Operating Officer at Global Lead where he orchestrated an expansion of the firm’s consulting and technology platforms, and a tenfold increase in the firm’s size.  Named Global Lead’s CEO in 2008, he engineered their evolution to Global Novations, at the time the largest, most recognized diversity and inclusion consulting and training company in the world.  He continued as Chief Executive at Global Novations from 2010, until its friendly acquisition in 2012, by Korn Ferry, the global consulting firm specializing in leadership, executive search, and talent development, with 80 offices and 3,400 employees around the world.

Until recently, Oris served as a Senior Partner at Korn Ferry, leading the firm’s Workforce Performance, Inclusion and Diversity practice and functioning as Global Head of Life Sciences for Leadership and Talent Consulting.  Last month Oris accepted the position of Senior Vice President and Chief Diversity Officer for the National Basketball Association in New York.

Oris Stuart holds an undergraduate degree in electrical engineering from The University of Virginia, and earned his MBA as a Fuqua Scholar at Duke University.
