"How Did Our Economy Get In This Condition and What Are We Going To Do About It"

Our Speaker – Bill Sherrill

Billy Wayne Sherrill was in the eighth grade at Lanier Junior High School when he enrolled in the U.S. Marines in December of 1941. Two older brothers had already been drafted, the military strike against Pearl Harbor had mobilized thousands of others, and Bill wasn’t about to wait until he was 17 for his turn.
Sherrill was also taking the first step of what he hoped would be a military career that would span decades. Sherrill served in several major campaigns. It was on Iwo Jima that Bill took a shot in the arm, sustaining nerve damage, and was sent to a naval hospital in Oakland, California. By then he’d decided to make the military a career, so it was devastating to hear he instead would receive a medical discharge.
From there, a series of events led to an entirely different outcome. He went on to be the first in his family to earn a college degree and subsequently led a very successful professional life that included founding and leading many entrepreneurial efforts, from start-ups to turnarounds, in fields as diverse as real estate development, electronics, manufacturing, banking, and finance. He also has an impressive record of achievement in government and corporate life, working with Judge Roy Hofheinz on Houston’s landmark Astrodome, being twice appointed as a Governor of the U.S. Federal Reserve Board, and serving as Director of the U.S. Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC). He was President of Associates Corporation of North America and a Director of Gulf and Western Industries, Inc.

A native Houstonian and alumnus of the University of Houston, Bill returned to his alma mater to make a difference in education. In 1991 he founded the Cyvia and Melvyn Wolff Center for Entrepreneurship at Bauer College, rated the #1 or #2 college program for entrepreneurship in the country for the past 3 years by The Princeton Review and Entrepreneur magazine. In 1994, he was named the Ernst & Young National Entrepreneur of the Year in recognition of the excellence of the program. He has also been a member of the Bauer College Advisory Council under three Deans, including current Dean Arthur Warga.
