Detecting and Handling Governance
& Ethics Challenges in International Consulting

An Evening With A. Y. Zohny

Academic Director of the International Business
and Trade Program at American University’s
Kogod School of Business

Consulting internationally has growing interest and importance for IMC members. For some, it’s already central to our practices; many others are interested; and globalization increases the likelihood that we’ll all need to explore it. In 2009, management and consulting services represented the largest share of U.S. professional services exports, the only area that year without a trade deficit. But we need special awareness, knowledge and skill (beyond technical expertise) to capture and execute business effectively in global markets.

While IMC NCR has addressed international consulting issues in the past, there's still an elephant in the room we must understand and prepare for: governance and ethics issues in many countries that need our services.

Virtually every consultant working globally finds governance and ethical challenges in developing countries, more advanced "emerging economies” and even some major "advanced” ones. Demands or expectations of bribes, kickbacks or data falsification, employment of favored individuals and generating predetermined outcomes exist here, but in some countries they are more structural, widespread and blatant.

Personal ethics aside, U.S.-based consultants face serious legal strictures (e.g., the 1977 Foreign Corrupt Practices Act). Even IMC’s strict Code of Ethics can easily clash with prevailing practices elsewhere.

We'll tackle this critical topic head-on, through an interactive session with an expert who commands a unique combination of technical qualifications, multidisciplinary substantive knowledge, extensive practical experience and personal dedication. We’ll learn how to do business internationally on a competitive footing without compromising integrity. Equally important, we’ll consider what we can do as consultants to promote good governance and ethical management practices globally.

About Our Speaker:

Prof. A. Y. Zohny is Academic Director of the International Business and Trade Program at American University’s Kogod School of Business. Simultaneously, he consults extensively with major international development agencies (e.g., the World Bank, USAID and UN) and serves on international bodies especially focused on improving and internationalizing higher education.

Concurrently with his academic duties and consulting, he manages a trade-facilitation firm built on his active legal practice both in DC and internationally, providing expert legal services and guidance to organizations - including major public bodies - concerned with international business. He has also worked actively for decades to improve governance and business/government ethics in the Arab countries.

His academic qualifications include a Ph.D. in Public and International Affairs (University of Pittsburgh) and M.A. in Political Science (Bloomsburg University). He holds two law degrees: one from Shams University (Cairo) and one from American University in DC (in International Business Law, earned after his Ph.D.)

Prof. Zohny has taught at 6 major universities in the Washington, DC area, and conducted over 100 international executive seminars for corporate and government senior managers from more than 50 countries.
