Rock the PMBOK ®
The Ultimate Guide to
Managing Consulting Projects

 Presentation Files
An Evening With J. Kendall Lott, PMP, MPIA

Now, you did it.  You landed your biggest consulting project yet.  Suddenly, you have more staff, more
work, more revenue – along with more results to deliver, more budgets to manage, and more deadlines
to meet.  How can you do it all?  The PMBOK ®  Guide to the rescue!

The Project Management Institute’s (PMI) Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (The
PMBOK ®  Guide) establishes a global vocabulary, standards, norms, methods, processes, and practices to
produce excellence in managing projects.  Many top consultants rely on the PMBOK ®  Guide and the rigor
it provides to their projects.  Numerous IMC Certified Management Consultants (CMCs ® ) are also PMI
Certified Project Management Professionals (PMPs ® ).

Our September session provides an overview of the PMBOK ®  Guide and it’s applications to the types of
projects consultants perform.  We’ll explore how The Guide can improve scheduling, budgeting, quality,
and profitability on your consulting projects.  We will journey through The PMBOK ®  Guide’s five process
groups and nine knowledge areas.  You’ll learn how leveraging its competencies, tools, and techniques
can deliver for you more and better consulting projects.

The IMC USA Competency Framework for Certified Management Consultants ®  codifies the knowledge,
skills, and behaviors that define successful management consulting, and forms the basis for IMC USA’s
CMC ®  qualification.  Project management is one of the fundamental competencies in The Framework.
The PMBOK ®  Guide puts The Framework into action by leading you through:

  • Scoping requirements (a well defined scope of work; realistic objectives and deliverables; client-owned solutions)
  • Planning and managing your engagement (work allocation; project schedule and accountability;reporting and communications)
  • Managing your client interface (contractual agreements; operating within terms of the engagement;managing stakeholder expectations)
  • Ensuring quality of deliverables (monitoring and measuring client satisfaction)
  • Managing risk (identifying and communicating issues that impact success; managing project changes)
  • Managing project disengagement (the disengagement plan; predicting potential areas of deficit;drawing the project to a close with client ownership of deliverables).
We hope you will join us for networking, dinner, and our topic for the evening.
