Steps to Get You Started

Step One: Establish Mentoring Goals
  • Identify your three most important development needs
  • Identify critical success factors and key barriers to success
  • Formulate SMART goal statements
mentoringStep Two: Define the Type of Mentoring Relationship Desired
  • Take into consideration your decision-making ability and preferences for detail orientation, spontaneity vs. structure and extraversion vs. introversion
  • Address your goals explicitly with your mentor and determine mutually if your mentor’s style will both complement and challenge your own
Step Three: Plan the Initial Meeting
  • Get to know each other
  • Share your mentoring goals
  • Agree on the ground rules for your relationship
    • How often you will meet
    • Method for meeting
    • Face-to-face, voicemail, email
    • Boundaries
  • What is appropriate and what is not appropriate
  • Practice professional ethics, e.g., having coffee is acceptable, going over to the other’s house (unless it is to work in a home-based office), dating, or going to the movies together are not
Step Four: Manage the Relationship
  • Communicate effectively
  • Prepare for meetings
  • Overcome challenges
  • Give and receive feedback
  • Stay on track towards your mentoring goals
