Social media is a hot topic lately. Everyone is using it – celebrities, children,
businesses. What is it exactly and what
does it mean to a management consultant?
According to Wikipedia, "Social media are media for social
interaction, using highly accessible and scalable publishing techniques. Social
media use web-based technologies to transform and broadcast media monologues
into social media dialogues.”
In a
blog
posted on the IMCUSA.org website, Mark Haas, CMC, FIMC, wrote, "Social media,
started as a person to person venture, has steadily morphed into a business to
business enterprise. If the purpose is to be social and share information about
yourself, then this seems an excellent way to both market your services as well
as deliver them.
"Consider at a minimum the search capabilities of LinkedIn,
the community building power of Twitter, the impact of many shared bookmarking
sites, or the growing ability to create communities of interest. All of these
work well for consulting firms and we should all have a social media policy as
part of our overall business plan.”
As consultants explore ways to increase their social media
presence, the IMCUSA.org website has developed several features available to
benefit members who want to augment their social media visibility and presence.
Haas says, "Since the IMC USA website gets a million page
views a year, creating a member profile may actually be a better platform than
your own site. Additionally, you can
create personal, chapter or community blogs and comment on other people’s
posts. And you can post photos and news,
about you personally or for your chapter or group.”
A new set of features on
IMCUSA.org gives you the ability to promote your IMC profile throughout the
web. As a member, you can now
simply link your IMC account to your Facebook page, so that any of your
activities on the IMC site (for example, a post on a blog, uploading a photo,
or commenting on a news item) will show up automatically on Facebook. You can do this by clicking the f-Connect
button on the right "My Profile” panel. The app will walk you through a few
easy setup screens.
