Dear IMC,
Back by Popular Demand!
February 20, 2007...
The evening session, Special Session: Consultants Meet Consultants and Clients (CmCC) Facilitated by Jerry Savin, FIMC
Do you ever wish that you had a systematic collaborative approach to networking, with which you could develop a network of relationships rather than a collection of business cards and vague acquaintances?
Would you like to meet the consultants that work in your industry and/or can refer you to their clients?
IMC presents Consultants meet Consultants and Clients, a special program designed to help you make the contacts you need to form synergies, alliances and get new clients! The CmCC format has proven so successful at international consulting meetings that Jerry Savin, FIMC, CMC, wanted to bring it to IMC SoCal.
Here is what some of last years participants had to say about the CMCC event;
- "An innovative and fresh approach to the subject of 'getting to know you'. Every consultant wants to understand practice areas of others in order to identify possible synergies which could expand the notion of trusted advisor in the mind of the client. A must attend for any consultant serious about their profession."
-- Don McNamara, CMC
- "The CmCC indeed "wet my appetite" for more. The intimacy of talking one-on-one with a specific purpose and in a formal and uninterrupted vehicle adds so much more value to IMC membership. Because of CmCC I was able to secure 2 new projects and clients that will amount to 25% of my 2007 annual income."
Becky Collins, MBA,
- "High-value structured and disciplined in- depth networking for CMCs"
Curt Deckert, CMC
- "Best value IMC event this side of Confab!"
Peter Crosby, CMC
Our program begins at 4:30 PM with an introduction and explanation of the CmCC process. During the evening, you will be paired with as many as four consultants with whom you have synergies in industries served, services provided and/or clients. Our facilitator, Jerry Savin, will match you with other consultants based on the profile that you submit to him prior to the event, using the PDF form below. In each 30 minute meeting with another consultant, you will have an opportunity to share information and discuss how you might work together, refer clients or other opportunities to each other. The program includes up to four pairings with custom-matched consultants, general networking time, dinner and a debriefing session.
To participate in this special event, you will need to register well in advance and fill out a form describing your practice, clients, services and project examples. Submit the form to Jerry Savin by February 8th. Jerry will pair you with four “matches” – consultants with whom you have synergies and can collaborate with.
IMPORTANT: By February 1st, download the form (doc) , fill it out and email back to Jerry Savin at jsavin@ctcg.com. Registration after the February 8th deadline might result in less than optimal pairings. No registration at the door for this event.

President's Message |

|
The IMC SoCal year is half over. We’ve had a series of excellent programs at a popular new venue. Our national organization has overcome its financial problems and is racing ahead with one new benefit after another while increasing support for the local chapters. But we still need local help to do everything that’s needed to give you the full benefit of chapter membership.
Last Tuesday’s program was excellent. Cliff Atkinson, the PowerPoint expert, explained the benefits of hosting a membership web site, and how to go about building one. We got a bonus; he showed us the key parts he built for the lawyer’s presentation that won the Vioxx case in Texas.
Jennifer Beever’s workshop was a well-documented overview of the types of technologies used in Web 2.0, with explanations of how they could be used by consultants and their clients. Attendees got her booklet on “30 Ways to Increase your Online Presence”. She left us with a lot of very useful information!
New National initiatives include more publicity about IMC and our Certification program, new courses through the Academy for Professional Development, alliances with organizations of benefit to consultants like Blue Chip Expert, the American Management Association (with which we will have a Grande Conference in Orlando), and One Page Business Plan (see the announcement in this newsletter). They are also speeding up our chapter allocations of dues: we’ll get 90% of the allocation based on members renewed as of February 15, so please renew (or join) as soon as possible, if you haven’t already.
We need you on the team! We’ll be holding elections in a couple of months for positions opening on the Board at the beginning of July, and we’ll need to start planning for next year before that. Meanwhile, the Membership Committee needs people for a new National initiative – to be in the first group of chapters, we need manpower. We also see several activities that will benefit the chapter if only there is someone who can help carry them out. Please talk to me or to the chair of a committee you’re interested in. All our contact information is on www.IMCSoCal.org.
Thank you to all of you who are already serving as officers, Board members, or Chairs, and to those of you who are going to volunteer!
Margaret Chock CMC, President

LAX IMC BREAKFAST MEETING - February 2, 2007
"How to Speak Like a Leader in Your Industry or Practice" with Chris Witt
To build our practices as consultants we have to establish ourselves as leading experts who are able to help organizations solve problems or achieve goals. One of the most effective ways of demonstrating that we are leaders in our field is by giving speeches.
This presentation will show you how to speak more like a leader and less like a technical expert. It will guide you through a 3-step process for developing and delivering a speech that will promote your practice:
- Step 1: Determine Your Goals
- Step 2: Develop Your Content
- Step 3: Perfect Your Delivery
Chris Witt, president of Witt Communications, works with executives and business owners who want to speak like leaders, and with scientific and technical professionals who want to communicate technical information in a way that other people can understand and implement.

OC BREAKFAST MEETING- February 8, 2007
"The Secrets of 'Collective Activity' in Building Consulting Referrals" with James T. Stodd, President, JT Stodd & Associates
For most of us independent consultants, 90% of our consulting opportunities are generated through referrals from colleagues, clients or other contacts. Yet most of us continue to approach our business development thinking and acting as soloists. And we do so even though we operate within a very competitive arena that offers many alternatives, including the services of some large well-known consulting firms, and there is overwhelming evidence that organizing, promoting and delivering any professional service (including management consulting services) is best done as a team sport!
Learn the answers at our IMC OC Breakfast Meeting on Friday, February 8, when Jim Stodd, President, JT Stodd & Associates (and an excellent public speaker), shares the secrets of collective activity in building consulting services. Before becoming an individual practitioner, Jim worked with big international firms including Ernst & Young LLP and Hay Management Consultants. During that time he had an opportunity to learn a lot about how these firms cultivate, capture and act upon referrals and other business development opportunities. Based upon his years of experience as a “big firm guy”, he will share a number of the lessons learned and how these can be applied by the rest of us. In particular, he will cover:
- Harnessing the power of a “collective” branding
- Building a referral base through strategic alliances
- Equipping “soloists” to generate, make and receive referrals
- Turning groups of professionals into referral generating machines.
Jim Stodd, President of JT Stodd & Associates, helps clients develop organizations and capabilities required to achieve strategic visions and goals. Before starting his independent consulting practice in 2001, he was associated with Ernst & Young, LLP, Hay Management Consultants, and First Transitions. He holds a BA in Psychology from Saint Louis University and a MS in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from Illinois State University. He also completed extensive post-graduate work at the University of Minnesota. He currently teaches classes in Organization Change Management and Human Resource Management at UCI.
