What Generational Differences Mean for Your Client Engagements

    Evening Session:

"What Generational Differences Mean for Your Client Engagements" with Annika Hylmö, Ph.D., Partner, The Interchange Group

When you take on a consulting assignment, you agree to complete certain business or organizational objectives. Your agreement or contract often maps out the business aspects of the assignment, including timelines, the processes, tools, and methodologies you will use, and the expected outcomes. But agreements and contacts don't address the biggest obstacle to achieving results - that people resist change. Furthermore, people are not all alike, and leading them to change requires special knowledge and understanding of how to influence them.

At this IMC SoCal dinner program you will learn how different generations react to change and how to influence each generation successfully. In addition to learning about the different generations, The Interchange Group will share its new research on how generations differ in the U.S. versus other countries. Our speaker, Annika Hylmo, is a partner at The Interchange Group, which has been conducting groundbreaking research and analysis in generational differences within the United States and globally. The Interchange Group specializes in helping organizations and individuals grow and embrace change through purposeful planning, culture alignment, and leadership development programs.

    President's Message

    Please Vote!

If you are an IMC SoCal member, that is - you should have received your ballot by now. It's a fast and easy one. Most officers and directors are finishing a two- year term, but we will need a President!
Now we know how to go about selling our consulting services. Don McNamara CMC and Mark Friedman, our Professional Development and Facilities, Equipment & Contracts Chairs respectively used their own background as Sales Management consultants together with some materials from Taking Flight (see Don about that course!) to teach us about consultative selling at the April meeting. We learned how to figure out the level of the particular prospect, and the appropriate types of questions to ask of a prospect at that level.
After dinner, a panel of clients discussed their considerations when hiring consultants. They didn't all use the same criteria, but some interesting and useful patterns emerged. Thank you Don and Mark - and please thank your panelists again for us!

    Best wishes,
    Margaret Chock CMC, President

OC IMC BREAKFAST MEETING May 8 , 2008

"Consulting Careers in Transition: Seven Principles of a Successful Free Agency"
Presented by: Bill Ellermeyer, Principal, The Ellermeyer Company

Your career is always in transition, whether you are with an employer or in your own consulting practice -- and you have no choice but to become the business manager of your own enterprise. The winners will be those who succeed in positioning themselves most strategically in today's mobile economy.
New opportunities are created, and the line between employment and free-lance is becoming less distinct, as younger upward-mobile professionals change companies more often, older professionals are outplaced, and more professionals seamlessly cycle between employment and consulting. A question for all professionals, in particular consultants, is when to retire. Should you live to work or work to live? A new concept is "unretirement," which cannot only enrich your life, but also lengthen it.

    IMC SoCal Announcements

    Focus Interest Groups (FIGs)
    Launch Announcement

The IMC SOCAL Board has approved a new initiative for IMC member collaboration. Announcements will be forthcoming in May or June. Here is the direction at this point.

    • Focus Interest Groups (FIGs) are flexible and interactive forums designed to address topics of member interest not covered in other formats like dinner and breakfast meetings.
    • A FIG focus can include marketing a service, addressing the needs of a client industry, how to run a practice, or any other consulting-related topic.
    • FIGs are self-forming and self-sustaining most likely with fewer than five or six members. Those wanting to join a FIG must be IMC members.

    Prospective FIGs include:

    • Practice development advisory boards
    • Marketing Roundtable
    • Personal network development
    • South Bay, Westside, and other regional groups
    • Operations Improvement/supply chain management
    • Women in Consulting

Look for future announcements and directions on joining a FIG. These will come through IMC SOCAL meeting announcements, the newsletter, and the website.
