Arizona SB1070From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Arizona Senate Bill 1070is legislation signed into law in theU.S. stateofArizonaby governorJan Breweron April 23, 2010.[1]It is the broadest and strictest anti-illegal immigrationmeasure in decades[1]and has been received with national and international attention and controversy.[2][3][4]The bill does not have a specified effective date and will go into effect on the general effective date of July 28, 2010, 90 days after the end of the legislative session.[5][6]It is expected to face legal challenges. The bill makes it amisdemeanorstate crime to be an illegal immigrant in Arizona, steps-up state and local law enforcement of Federal immigration laws, and cracks down on those sheltering, hiring and transporting illegal immigrants. The paragraph on intent in the legislation says it embodies an 'attrition through enforcement' doctrine.[7][8] Critics of the legislation say it encouragesracial profiling[9], while supporters have said that the law enforces existing federal law. There have been protests in opposition to the law in several cities, including calls for boycotts of Arizona by critics. Recent polling found the law has majority support in Arizona and nationwide.
