The Final Word From The Outgoing Chair

The Final Word From The Outgoing Chair

I want to thank all of you for your strong support and efforts to keep improving IMC USA. We have accomplished a lot together and the Institute is well positioned for even more success in 2018. This will not be a four-page update like I normally do twice a year. It is a simple reflection of what I consider the most important take-aways from the State of the Institute at the 2018 Annual Meeting.

First, after greatly reducing our expenses in the last 3 years, IMC USA is operating in the black for 2018 through April. Bank account balance comparisons of April 2017 to April 2018 show an increase of 44%, an improvement that allowed the IMC USA board to approve a breakeven budget for 2018 that includes critical and strategic projects for our association.

Second, the Institute closed the legacy retirement plan at the end of 2017 and today has no further liability regarding that plan. Due to the very low original funding of the plan and the high current cost of maintaining such a plan, service and fees had been consuming approximately 18% of our annual dues revenue.

Third, the elimination of the retirement plan has freed those cash payments to be used for marketing and other important services. The 2018 Budget has the strongest Marketing Budget in many years. That is what has created the ability to fund the new website and provide updated branding for IMC USA.

Fourth, the Reason For Being (RFB) Website Sprint Team and RFB Branding Sprint Team are well into the execution of their work updating our brand and website to better serve existing members and attract new members. The updated site is expected to go live by July 31, 2018. The current website is being transitioned to Amazon Web Services to increase uptime and support. It will be down for a few hours on May 19th for the change-over. Because IMC USA has already fully paid for the website update service and approximately 50% of the cost of the updated branding, IMC USA bank balances should continue to increase.

Fifth, the return of an IMC USA Connector eLetter and the addition of the complimentary Management Consulting Connection newsletter mark a significant improvement in communications to our members. A new IMC USA Marketing Committee is responsible for revitalizing the Connector and many other marketing activities such social media and new member campaigns. If you would like to contribute to that effort, contact IMC USA’s VP of Marketing, Jennifer Beever, at

Please remember our 50th Anniversary Conference Celebration to be held in San Diego during early October. It looks to be an awesome event. Register for the Conference by May 31st to receive our special, low early-bird price of $595 for members, and $795 for non-members.

There have been many more accomplishments in the last few years (like the IMC USA Chat Room, expanded Academy offerings, the Mentoring Program, and other RFB Sprint projects) by many more member volunteers. Those mentioned in detail seemed to me to have made or will make the greatest difference for IMC USA in 2018 and beyond.

Thank you to all who have worked hard to improve our Institute during the current disruption in our industry and our recent very challenging economic times. Your words of encouragement have been helpful and quite often very timely.

IMC USA is the wonderful community of game-changing consultants that it is, due to the collective work of each of you in bringing to life the vision that is the Reason for Being. I encourage everyone to continue pursuing the vision.

Best regards,

Don Matheson CMC®

2018 Message From The Chair

Posted By Noelle Campany, Monday, January 8, 2018
Updated: Monday, January 8, 2018

Happy New Year! Welcome back to another great year at IMC USA. The Institute accomplished much in 2017 and is well positioned for even more success in 2018. Here are some of the highlights of 2017 as well plans for 2018 listed by topic. These include opportunities for individual involvement in making IMC USA even stronger.

2018 Is 50th Anniversary of IMC USA:

This year IMC USA celebrates its 50th Anniversary culminating with the 2018 Conference. Destination and site negotiations are in progress and should be completed in the next few weeks. Stay tuned for more information.

Major Financial Hurdle Overcome In 2017:

Years ago our Institute committed to providing a retirement plan for former employees. The annual operating cost required to service the direct expenses and fees associated with the legacy plan have approached as much as 20% of annual dues revenue. The Board of Directors successfully engineered a buyout of the program in the fourth quarter of 2017 to eliminate this annual expense. The plan will be officially terminated through the required IRS filings in the first quarter of 2018. There will be no further costs associated with the plan once it is officially terminated.

  • IMC USA celebrated its founding legacy of ICMCI in 2017 and strengthened its 30-year relationship.
  • Our Institute is working collaboration initiatives with ICMCI in 2018 to produce mutually beneficial value to each organization.

  • The complimentary Session One is an excellent opportunity for chapters to introduce potential members to IMC USA and The Academy.

o   The Institute acquired 73 new members in 2017 including 12 Students and 1 Young Professional.

o   Our newest members continued the recent trend of quickly becoming involved and active within chapters, on national committees, and most recently on the IMC USA Board of Directors.

  • As IMC USA celebrates its 50th Anniversary, RFB offers every member the opportunity to build upon the legacy of those that came before us and prepare IMC USA to grow during the next 50 years.

With the stock market continuing to set record highs, the economy rocking with two consecutive quarters of GDP greater than 3.0%, consumer confidence at a 17 year high, unemployment at a 17 year low, and companies advancing major investments in plant, equipment, and people, 2018 should be a record year for all of our members. As we work to develop our own businesses, we should all remember that we also have access to one of the greatest resources of additional support with our fellow IMC USA members.

Thank you for all that you do to make IMC USA this wonderful community of game changing management consultants.

Best regards,

Message from the Chair: 2017 Annual Meeting Recap

Posted By Noelle Campany, Friday, June 2, 2017

Message From The Chair

On Monday, May 15, IMC USA elected Officers and new Directors at the Annual Meeting of the Institute held in Chicago, IL.

I thank all our members for re-electing me as Chair & CEO as well as re-electing Dennis Schumaker as Treasurer. Jennifer Beever, Shathi Govender, Al Sagarese, and John Tracy were elected as our newest Directors. During the board meeting immediately following the Annual Meeting, Jennifer Beever was elected Vice President of Marketing, Loraine Huchler was elected Vice President of Professional Learning, and Gregory Brooks was elected Secretary. Please join me in thanking each for their willingness to serve in these critical roles.

We held a special congratulatory program at the beginning of the Annual Meeting recognizing ICMCI as it celebrates 30 years. Thirteen of the original individuals that helped establish ICMCI were IMC USA leaders. We also held a memorial for John Roethle, who was one of the thirteen. John passed away a few days before the meeting. Here are two of the PowerPoint slides used during this part of the meeting.

A review of 2016 was also provided during the Annual Meeting as well as an overview of 2017 plans and accomplishments to date.

Here are a few of the more memorable 2016 & 2017 to date successes as well as actions you can take to learn more and increase your involvement as a member of IMC USA.

C2M Live!:

  • C2M Live!, IMC USA’s regular online webinar discussion program, continued to grow with record attendance levels throughout 2016 and thus far in 2017. Some of our topics attracted over 70 attendees. If you are not yet on our mailing list, sign up to receive C2M Live program invitations by creating a Guest Membership here.
  • IMC USA offered a special C2M Live! program, Become a Conference Commando, on May 4. The program was provided complimentary to all who registered including non-members. There were 79 registered with approximately half being non-members.  Watch the archived program here.

Special Boot Camp: When Does Client Acquisition Get Easy?

  • We will offer the first ever Summer Boot Camp which will run from June 9 through June 30, 2017. This is a four-session program that was developed based on feedback from an earlier C2M Live! session. Participation is limited to 12. A link to this program can be found here.

Expanded Social Media:

  • The IMC USA FacebookLinkedIn and Twitter accounts were expanded in 2016 and 2017. A new Instagram account was launched in 1Q2017 by Young Professional member Charles Nunnally.
  • These efforts resulted in an increase of IMC USA followers online and increased awareness about IMC USA’s membership benefits, conference, Academy programs, and C2M Live!.
  • The Institute now has a larger footprint on our LinkedIn group with more conversations and comments. Please join the discussion here.

The Academy:

  • The Academy continued to improve its content and performance through 1Q2017 with significant increases in participation. It is now consistently operating in the black.
  • Archived sessions are available on the website. The reclassification of the archived offerings and the addition of stronger search options should be completed in July. This project will make it much easier to identify and locate past programs for download.

Mentoring Program:

  • The Mentoring Program is in the final stages of refinement under the leadership of Parag Ambardekar. The complete program should be available to all by the end of August.
  • Parag is working with the Conference Committee to offer one-on-one mentoring events at the 2017 Conference in addition to the chapter mentoring programs.
  • If you are interested in being a mentor or signing up to be mentored (both entry level and experienced consultants can benefit from mentorship!) please email Noelle Campany,

New Thought Leadership Website:

  • IMC USA has created a new Thought Leadership Website, Consulting 2.0, to help Business to Business (B2B) consultants attract new clients and grow successful practices.
  • This presents continuing opportunities for our members to contribute thought leadership articles in the following areas.
    • Marketing
    • Selling
    • Relationships
    • Buyer Insights
    • Management
    • Resources
  • Editorial guidelines and submission information can be found here.
  • Additional questions can be addressed to our Vice President of Professional Learning, Loraine Huchler, at or 609-896-4457.

  • The 2016 Conference was a remarkable success with a strong international contingent of consultants joining us from Bangladesh, Canada, Finland, Greece, Japan, and Jordan.
    • Participants were excited as exemplified by the statement of one of our long-time members who wrote “this conference ranks right up with the best of the 15 conferences that I have attended”.
    • Comments, pictures, and video endorsements can be found here.
  • The 2017 Conference builds upon the success of 2016. Registrations are already ahead of 2016.

      • New Member Advisor – Adam Cherrill

      • Presenter & Local Promotion Advisor – Mike Wittenstein CMC
    • Three month special combo Conference/Membership package ran through May 31.
    • IMC USA turns 50 years old in 2018. Our 50th Anniversary celebration begins at the 2017 conference.
    • IMC USA Conference speakers do not present and run. They remain available to attendees for out of session questions and pictures as can be seen on the 2016 Conference Highlights. See our 2017 roster of speakers here.
    • A link to the full conference agenda can be found here.

Like many professional associations, IMC USA has experienced changes in its membership due in part to new forms of competition in online learning, information and networking opportunities. IMC USA has responded with new membership offers, new benefits, and conducted “voice of the member” research in our Reason for Being (RFB) project. Our Board of Directors and volunteer committees are now working to roll out further initiatives as a result of what we learned from the RFB research. Email our Association Executive, Noelle Campany,, if you’d like to volunteer.

  • New membership offerings and associated price points are well positioned to help IMC USA grow as well as maintain the portion of our membership that is nearing retirement.
    • Students - $95.00
    • Young Professional - $195.00
    • Professional -  $325.00
    • Certified -  $395.00
    • Retired Professional - $162.50
    • Certified Management Consultant Emeritus - $150.00
  • The strong increase in member benefits and savings, coupled with the full range of membership categories makes IMC USA membership an excellent option for aspiring or more senior management consultants.
  • CMC Emeritus membership grew 40% from 2015 to year to date 2017.
  • CMC membership grew 26% from 2015 to year to date 2017.
  • Professional and Young Professional membership declined during this same time period.
    • This is partly due to Professional members becoming certified.
    • But, we also had a net loss of professional membership.
    • The good news in this membership sector is that our newest members are quickly becoming involved, and active in the Institute.
    • Lauralee Hites joined in 2016, participated in the Leadership Summit and soon began contributing as a member of the Conference and Social Media Committees.
    • Charles Nunnally joined in 2016, participated in the Conference, and soon began contributing as a member of the Conference and Social Media Committees.
    • Shathy Govendor joined in 2016 after moving to the U.S. and was elected an IMC USA Director.
    • Adam Cherrill joined in 2017 and is contributing to the Conference Committee
  • During the first quarter of 2016, we finished the member endorsement videos that we started in the fourth quarter of 2015. There are now nine member videos on our website touting the benefits of IMC USA membership. Here is a direct link to that page.

2017 Marketing Program:

  • New Expert Click Press Release distribution for special chapter events – contact our Association Executive, Noelle Campany,, for more information.
  • Website improvements are underway, including
    • Updates to improve navigation and user experience
    • Added information about the new RFB (Voice of Member) initiatives
    • Improved online community and member engagement
    • A strengthened learning platform
  • Recharge IMC USA Public Relations efforts
  • Focus on Content Marketing such as Thought Leadership Website
  • Expand outside promotion of Academy and other programs
  • Please contact Vice President of Marketing, Jennifer Beever,, 818-347-4248, to volunteer on IMC USA’s Marketing or Social Media Committees.

Reason for Being (RFB), IMC USA’s Voice of The Member Project:

This project launched in February of 2016 upon approval by the Board and was jointly sponsored by the IMC USA Marketing and Membership Committees. The RFB began as an effort to identify support changes needed among our members and the market to reset our strategic direction. It included input from a large percentage of our membership and significant face time via Zoom with representatives from all geographies (both chapter and at-large), tenures in the profession and levels of engagement within IMC USA. It continued through September with a status presentation to the Leadership Summit in October.

Based upon the overwhelming support of IMC USA leaders from around the country, the Board of Directors approved a continuation of this effort at the end of 2016. RFB has become the foundation for the IMC USA’s current strategic plan and will support the future expansion of our organization. Each IMC USA Board Director has taken specific initiative efforts in support of the continued build-out of RFB as it relates to the future direction of the Institute.

The Reason for Being is more than a Mission Statement. It is a very carefully worded declaration of our intent as an organization. Inside our Reason for Being is a formula for the future success of IMC USA. It tells us and the rest of the world what we do, for whom, and how each will be better. A pdf overview of the program can be found here.

A special thank you to Mike Wittenstein CMC, Business Designer and Customer Experience Expert at StoryMiners and member of the Georgia Chapter, who shepherded and facilitated this grassroots process with our many members that contributed and participated in the development of RFB during 2016. It has been a strong collaborative effort.

While IMC USA has made many advancements, it is and continues to be a work in progress. As we roll out the Reason for Being in 2017, we will be introducing more incremental opportunities to assist in the future building of the Institute.

The dedication and support of our many volunteer members continues to strengthen IMC USA each day. IMC USA recently lost one of its most ardent supporters, Don Scellato. Don was excited about the RFB and was keenly interested in being a part of its success. He was an example for all of us and will be sorely missed. In case you missed the earlier notice, the IMC USA Foundation continues to accept contributions in his honor at this link.

Thank you for all that you do to make IMC USA successful.

Best regards,

Don Matheson CMC ®

Welcome back to another great year with IMC USA

Posted By Noelle Campany, Friday, January 15, 2016

Welcome back to another great year with IMC USA. Our organization continues to strengthen thanks to our outstanding members.

The preliminary 2015 results indicate that IMC built upon the financial success of 2014. The balance sheet is definitely stronger. Details of these results will be provided once the CPA completes the preparation of all of the required reporting documents.

During our Townhall Meeting in October, we highlighted the three major takeaways expected from that meeting. We have continued to build upon them in the fourth quarter of 2015 in preparation for 2016.

Here is an updated summary of the key takeaways.

·       Created the new membership category of Young Professional

·       14% increase in CMC members

·       38% increase in CMC Emeritus and Retired Professional Members

·       Earliest and highest CMC Triennial renewal rate in five years

·       New and more convenient marketing collateral material created for all member categories

·       Marketing collateral material created for Management Consulting Certificate Program (MCCP)

·       IMC is financially stronger and increased its net assets for the second year in a row

·       The Academy delivery process was strengthened eliminating historical operating losses

·       Requirements for CMC Emeritus were strengthened and improved

·       National committees operated more effectively and in sync with each other

·       IMC starts 2016 with the best beginning cash position in five years

·       The 2015-2016 renewals built upon the success of the 2014-2015 renewals

·       The Academy is scheduled to complete a major update of its offerings in 2016

·       Member endorsement videos were added to website with four more due in first quarter of 2016

·       Discussions underway for presentation of IMC’s Management Consulting Certificate Program

·       The Annual Conference returns in October of 2016

Speaking of the 2016 Conference, please make plans to attend in Washington, DC on October 21-23, 2016. Our conference is a great opportunity to network with your peers and enhance your skills through the various workshops and speakers. More details will be forthcoming in the next few weeks.

While our keynote speaker is almost set, we are still recruiting some of the workshop presenters. If you have suggestions for speakers or topics, please forward those to Noelle Campany at

The support and contributions of our many volunteer members make IMC USA stronger each day. Thank you for all that you do to make IMC USA successful.

Happy New Year!

Competence Rules!

Posted By Loraine A. Huchler CMC FIMC, Wednesday, June 19, 2013
Updated: Thursday, June 20, 2013
Competence Rules!

An article in the June edition of our newsletter, C2M Connections, made me think about the common challenges of consulting practices: expertise. The second article, excerpted from the Economist ("To the Brainy, the Spoils: As the World Grows More Confusing, Demand for Clever Consultants is Booming”) describes how "Clients are increasingly demanding specific expertise, not just raw brainpower. McKinsey and BCG, in particular, are hiring more scientists, doctors and mid-career industry types, and reducing the proportion of new MBAs in their ranks.”

Why? Because clients value competence – whether the consultant is associated with a large, mid-sized or small firm, or are a solo practitioner. There may be differences in the business structures, but the fundamentals of consulting as a profession are universal. Marvin Bower, the former Managing Director of McKinsey, was a founding member of IMC - he believed in these universal dimensions of professionalism and ethics that are the foundation of success in the business of consulting.

This is just one of the thought-provoking articles in C2M Connections, our monthly newsletter that reviews newspapers, periodicals and blogs to bring timely, relevant information to our readers. If you are not a member of IMC USA, you may subscribe to future issues by clicking here or you may save some money by joining IMC and receiving the newsletter as a member benefit; members of other institutes may subscribe by clicking here and registering as an "ICMCI Associate.”

On that same subject of competence, we have designed our GROW! conference to build your skills and increase your value to your clients.

  • Charles Green returns to educate and entertain us about the path towards greater trust in our relationships; if you haven’t seen his newsletter, try it by clicking here – it’s a delightful read!
  • Patricia Fripp is another speaker who is certain to deliver value; as one member commented, "Her session alone is worth the price of the entire conference.

”If you aren’t receiving periodic updates on the conference, just click here to subscribe. And, to see the entire set of speakers, click here and download the entire brochure.

If you want to know more about IMC, plan to attend our pre-conference event on Sunday, October 20 – it’s FREE with your conference registration!

Finally, no discussion of GROW! would be complete without a reminder: Las Vegas, Sunday evening, October 20, through Tuesday evening, October 22. Our room block is filling up quickly; click here and make your reservations today – don’t get locked out of the conference hotel!

Yours in consulting,

Happy New Year!

Posted By Drumm McNaughton FIMC, Wednesday, January 14, 2009
Updated: Wednesday, January 14, 2009
Hi Everyone,

Happy New Year! May 2009 be your best year ever!!!

In keeping up with the spirit of the Chair blog, I would like to highlight something which came out recently in the e-zine The One of our members, Greg Ward CMC, was quoted in an article about Gen Y in the marketplace and how they are making an impact while having special needs. It is a great article for those who are consulting in the areas of leadership, team building, culture, and organization change, and I highly recommend it.

Another thing I liked about the article is that in he is a "certified management consultant." Writing articles / being quoted and stating that you are a CMC and/or telling someone about your membership in IMC are some of the ways we are branding IMC and the CMC over the next years.

Thanks, Greg, for mentioning having the CMC - efforts like yours and others are helping us create broader recognition for the CMC and IMC membership in the marketplace.

Speaking of recognition, did you know that IMC will help you write a press release about something noteworthy that has happened to you / your business and release it for you to media outlets? As you know, press releases are a great way to develop pull marketing for your business, and getting quoted in the media (to whom the press releases go), can help you fill your pipeline.

We have issued press releases for a number of members already, including Loraine Huchler for her work in helping the Gulf Coast refineries return to operations following Hurricane Ike, and Ken Lizotte and his recent book The Expert's Edge.

If you have a newsworthy item on which you would like to have IMC issue a press release, please contact Gayle Carson, Bette Price, or Gail McCauley. They will be happy to get you on the road to becoming a "consultant rock star"!!!

Yours in consulting,

Welcome to the New IMC Website

Posted By Drumm McNaughton FIMC, Saturday, December 6, 2008
Welcome!!! This is my initial post to the Message from The Chair blog. I will post from time to time to let everyone know about the most recent comings and goings of the Institute, news of the profession, and other things which may be of interest to you, our members and guests.

Blogging is a relatively new thing for me - I have a blog on my own website which is woefully out of date (April 2008), and those posts tend to be of "white paper length" (my blog-savvy colleagues have told me that this is not the best way to do it, that "shorter is better"). So, I will take their advice to heart and "post less - post often."

As usual, there are a lot going on in IMC. We recently signed a strategic alliance with TAB (The Alternative Board) which will provide consulting opportunities for members to the TAB member CEOs. More on that as the agreement unfolds, but this is another way we are bringing more value to our members by helping them get more business.

We are also into the Christmas and Chanukah seasons, and in my first blog I wanted to talk about the importance of this holiday season. Whether you celebrate Christmas or Chanukah, the holidays are a special time - there is a special feeling in the air, and we take time off to be with family and loved ones. Personally, we have one of our sons coming home, so are busy purchasing / mailing gifts, and pulling down the decorations for the tree, and getting ready for our Christmas dinner (no, we're not having enchiladas again like we did this year for Thanksgiving; we will have the traditional turkey).

Here in IMC, they are no less special - chapters are having holiday gatherings instead of the usual monthly meetings, and we at national are getting ready for the new year. We have the gift of a new website (courtesy of Mark Haas FIMC CMC and his team - thanks everyone!), and with that an expanded sense of community. Be sure to check out the new site, update your profile, and renew your membership so that you can take advantage of the many new and great benefits we will be offering this next year.

Speaking of benefits, Santa came a little early this year, delivering a Christmas / Chanukah present of a $99 RainToday membership. We had over 230 people express interest, and so we are moving forward with the agreement. I'm excited about this - I attended my first RT webinar yesterday about building a Seven Figure Global Consulting Business, and easily got my $$$ worth!!!

This is the first time we have offered a group membership like this since I have been a member of IMC (since 1999). Let me know what you think - if you want more deals such as this and have some ideas on what we can to, send me a note at

Happy Chanukah and Merry Christmas to all

Yours in consulting
