Industry Focus:  Manufacturing
This month we visit our old friends of "Rust Belt" fame, the manufacturing sector.

One very hot topic for just about everyone is doing a "digital transformation".  Our friends at McKinsey Institute (among others) have produced a white paper talking about doing Digital Transformations in "Heavy Industry".  https://www.mckinsey.com/business-functions/operations/our-insights/a-guidebook-for-heavy-industrys-digital-journey

My background includes doing systems integration for automatic inspection and process control in steelmaking, semi-finished product production and discrete part manufacturing operations in metals and plastics.  These are called level one automation applications i.e. at the point of the production process application to the part.  The "digital transformation" movement as I see it is a next step in the integrated control space initiated with the ERP apps pioneered by SAP... and now many others. The "digital transformation" refers to digitizing everything in your business not already digital, and then integrating all these steps in an "overlay" network.  I see this as similar to the effects of and ERP installation.... and depending on where your firm is when you start, having a greater or lesser impact on your productivity and profitability.

I will lead a discussion on the general principals of a digital transformation and see if we can see where and if, we as small consulting firms, have a role to play in this space.  It is the major part for all enterprises, of what I have called the 1st Societal Revolution (vs the 4th Industrial Revolution)  on earlier occasions.   This is a broad and deep topic and one session is not sufficient to get into great detail on the subject.
The S Barrington abc will be doing sessions in this area, so stay tuned.  This should be a lively and interesting session.  I hope you can/will attend.
