July Sector Focus: Transportation and Logistics

PERSONS, PASSENGERS, PALLETS, PIPELINES or PACKETS...

Where do we start a discussion on the TRANSPORTATION SECTOR?

Modern "Transportation" has many facets and, at a general level, deals with moving animate creatures and in-animate: creatures, objects, fluids, solids, electrons, light waves, and  invisible and visible signals. The people and industries that move these entities are most often referred to in terms of the main "tools" used to do the work: long, medium and short haul Trucking, Freight or Passenger Railroads, passenger or freight Airlines, Maritime Vessels, Tele-Communications Companies (formerly Ma Bell), TV and Cable Networks, Power Grids, Transmission and Distribution Pipeline Networks and, last but not least, the Internet. This list contains 15 sub-sectors using 7 forms of natures creation to support the sub-sector's infrastructure.

It appears (there could be more) the federal government publishes information on the Transportation Sector from two sources: The Bureau of Transportation (DOT), and Census Bureau (Commerce Dept). Their definitions of what industries are included in the Transportation Sector differ! The Census Bureau has a more consistent view of reality and will be the definition used (a broader one) in the session.

Some of the content and tools of Transportation, will lead the perspectives on the Transportation Sector discussion.

The next step with be consideration of the implications of current transportation trends might be for our clients...and for us as consultants.

Richard Bullock will provide an overview on the nature, and recent history, of the "Transportation" sector and lead the discussion on implications. Obviously, there are many directions this topic could go.  So Richard asks that you each consider the Transportation Sector from you own perspective and be prepared to offer suggestions on where, and why, you think a particular aspect of this vast sector is more relevant to us and our clients.  Thanks and "taming this elephant" will be an interesting exercise.  We hope to see you there!
