Continuing our sector review
Industry Focus: Information Technology and Telecom
This month we will attempt to see what is going on in the Information Technology and Telecommunications sectors (IT and Telecom) and where we, as IMC’ers might fit in professionally. I say attempt, because my feeling is the distinction between these industries is muddled (very tech concept) in my humble opinion.
The internet is primarily responsible for this “muddle” that has emerged in the past 15 years, give or take. Are Zoom and the other 25 or so conferencing providers telecom firms or IT firms? What is the difference? Is Microsoft a telecom firm, conferencing, or both with their offering of “Skype for Business” and the “Teams” app they offer in Office 365… and maybe now on a standalone basis? Oh, maybe we should call them an IT firm because that is where they make most of their sales.
Cloud services are another area where the “muddle” is showing as well. Is Amazon an IT firm because of its leading role in the cloud computing realm? Here we also have some of the more traditional IT firms making major moves as well. Microsoft and IBM come to mind.
We could go on with numerous examples of firms that are in a multiplicity of businesses that we could class as IT or Telecom. But in the end it appears that whether it is with hardware, or software, or both, that firms in these spaces are really “DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY” specialists or conglomerates. Moving and/or controlling the movement and manipulation of digital data (text, sounds, images, digitized sensor outputs, etc) by building devices and/or writing software is what this sector does.
My sense is the dividing lines should be drawn between firms the a) build hardware, b) develop software or c) do both. The division along the IT and Telecom line is not distinctive in this era of the “DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION” in all business functions. The question for us as smaller consultants, might be: should we focus on the sellers of DIGITALLY TRANSFORMATIONAL PRODUCTS, or on the potential users of those products in assisting in their transitions to a DIGITALLY S organization?
We hope you Zoom with us for this session. It should be a lively and stimulating discussion as this area is going to be “TRANSFORMING” for a long time.
