Recognizing & Tackling Ethical Issues in Consulting

Executives do not hire untrustworthy management consultants, regardless of their skills or experience. That earned trust comes from your ability to convey your commitment to professionalism, independence and objectivity and your demonstration of considerable skills in consulting ethics.

Ethics is a skill that is not so much learned as it is instilled. Like any skill, ethics must be tested, evaluated, worked on and refined. When presented with an ethical dilemma, you rarely have time to read, research or consult. You must develop most of your applied skills through regular, intensive discussion with your peers and clients.

In the wake of recent serious, high visibility ethical breaches by a small number of consultants, clients are beginning to consider management consulting as a third party risk to be managed. What used to be an afterthought to clients and consultants has been elevated to a serious issue, for example in the mainstream media with Showtime's popular "House of Lies" series about sleazy management consultants.

This session addresses what a consultant needs to know - and be - to leverage his or her reputation for integrity. In addition to reviewing recent consulting ethical failures and their fallout, we will cover when it is appropriate to raise ethical issues and when discretion can be dangerous. We will describe two different approaches to creating value for your clients. Consider the first "defense" - assuring delivery of high integrity and professional consulting services. Consider the second "offense" - actively working with your client to positively enhance their ethical culture and practices. You’ll leave with a practical approach to deliver deeper services and to generate greater confidence in your services by your clients.


Mark Haas is Founder and President of Research and Organization Management, a Washington, DC strategy and performance management consulting firm. He advises executives and boards in a wide range of industries, including biomedical research, human services, education, trade and professional associations, vital records and engineering. He has facilitated high profile sessions such as national health security, World War IV strategy, STEM education, recovery from nuclear terrorism and CEO retreats. He is an author, invited speaker, seminar leader, expert witness, and former Baldrige examiner. He earned degrees from Colgate and Harvard Universities.

Mark is a Certified Management Consultant, Fellow of IMC, and past National Board Chair and CEO of IMC USA. He currently serves as IMC’s Ethics Committee Chair, wrote the current IMC Code of Ethics and enforcement procedures, and serves as IMC representative to the Ethics and Compliance Officers Association.
