Open Innovation:
Fresh Opportunities for Consultants
With Dr. Larry Crane, Open Innovation and R&D Process Expert

Tuesday, April 20, 5:00 - 7:00 p.m., Laurel Electronics, Inc.,
3183-G Airway Ave., Costa Mesa, CA 92626

The old paradigm of Closed Innovation
states that successful innovation requires control and direction, same as for product development, production, marketing, distribution, servicing, financing, and support.

The new paradigm of Open Innovation states that firms can and should use external ideas as well as internal ideas. The central idea behind Open Innovation is that in a world of widely distributed knowledge, companies cannot afford to rely solely on their own research, but should instead buy or license processes or inventions (e.g. patents) from other companies. In addition, internal inventions that not being used in a firm's business should be taken outside the company through licensing, joint ventures, spin-offs, etc.

Open Innovation presents new opportunities for consultants. While Open innovation will bring new ideas and fresh thinking to companies, it also needs to managed, and tradeoffs need to be made. Open innovation is not only limited to new products, but can be applied to all functional areas of a company.

To learn more about Open Innovation, please join us at our next IMC Technology SIG meeting on Tuesday, April 20, from 7:00 to 9:00 pm. Our guest speaker will be Dr. Larry Crane. Our venue will be the conference room of Laurel Electronics, Inc., 3183-G Airway Ave., Costa Mesa, CA 92626 (close to the intersection of the 405 and 55 freeways). Map. Those interested may proceed to a local restaurant following our meeting.
