More Information
Jim Ayers has extensive process improvement experience across multiple industries. These include consumer and industrial manufacturing, government agencies, utilities, ports, aerospace and defense, healthcare, financial institutions, and professional services. His published work includes eight books and over 20 articles on supply chain management, lean process design, operations strategy, and organization alignment.

Jim is the author of the Handbook of Supply Chain Management, 1st & 2nd Editions, published in 2000 and 2006 that is ranked “5 stars” on Amazon. The best seller documents best practices in five management tasks that comprise an SCM “body of knowledge.” He currently edits the Encyclopedia of Supply Chain Management that is sold in electronic and hard copy versions.
Clients often tap Jim’s management training capabilities addressing the skill requirements and tools for productivity improvement. He provides a multi-day workshop course called Supply Chain Reengineering that is certified compliant with the Project Management Institute’s Body of Knowledge (PMBOK-Guide®).

Jim has served clients seeking to lower costs and improve or maintain service levels. These include construction, banking and financial companies, customer service, civil engineering, healthcare inpatient and outpatient functions, maintenance, insurance claims processing, information technology, purchasing, and systems development. Examples include the following:

• Worked with clients executing large capital construction programs. These include
Schlumberger, Air Products & Chemicals, the Port of Long Beach, San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA), Southern California Edison, the Orange County Water District, Psomas (civil engineers), and the Delaware River Port Authority. Services included process improvement, software requirements and selection, and performance audits.

• Facilitated a review of Bombardier Transportation’s (the world’s largest manufacturer of public transit rail vehicles) supply chain and procurement organization. This led to a redesign of its structure, measures, and processes in Bombardier facilities and their many rail operator locations. The restructuring was essential to support the client’s strategy for gaining market share, a goal they have achieved as the industry leader.

• For a large utility, provided an internal assessment of compliance with prescribed processes for environmental spill management including reporting and remediation. Recommended procedures and assignments for strengthening compliance.

• Currently provides SCM training to an international oil field services provider. The company operates in remote sites on a global level. The training includes four days for supply chain staff (about 2000 employees) and a two day course for engineers.

• Implemented warehouse and logistics improvement for Brookstone Telecom in California. The firm was a contractor to wireless telecommunications operators for building or upgrading their networks. Designed a new warehouse layout and implemented procedures for material delivery services to the field.

• Analysis of environmental services performed at the Port of Long Beach (POLB). Identified areas for software support for handling large volume of service requests.

• Implementation of POLB processes and systems including procurement of construction-related services. Prepared solicitations, including user-defined features and requirements, for software packages and coordinated Port staff evaluations of the alternatives.

• Analyzed future operating requirements for the Orange County Water District’s Groundwater Replenishment (GWR) System, a 70 MGD “toilet to tap” facility. This included analysis of staff numbers, organization, and scheduling for operating the facility. Developed a roadmap for reviewing staff levels as the technology was implemented.

• Conducts workshops and courses in Europe, Hong Kong, the Middle East, and China. The effort has included delivering an Executive MBA supply chain management course to Chinese executives under contract to UCLA Extension. Jim’s Supply Chain Project Management, 2nd edition has also been translated into Simplified Chinese.

In addition to his experience with CGR, Jim headed healthcare and manufacturing practices for Los Angeles – based Theodore Barry & Associates (TB&A), and was a partner with the consulting division of Coopers & Lybrand, now PriceWaterhouseCoopers.

In the U.S. Navy, Jim was licensed as a nuclear power plant operator and served aboard Atlantic Fleet submarines. Jim holds a BS (with distinction) from the U.S. Naval Academy and MS Industrial Engineering and MBA degrees from Stanford. Jim’s industrial engineering degree includes a concentration in engineering economy, the financial analysis of capital investment decisions.
In addition to his publications, Jim is a member of the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP), Project Management Institute (PMI), and the Institute of Management Consultants (IMC) where he serves on its national committee for the Institute’s certification program for management consultants.
