Community Subgroups: Women Consultants Group

The IMC USA Women Consultants Group is an online discussion group where women consultants can learn, connect and grow their consulting practices.

The purpose of the IMC USA Women Consultants Group is to have a discussion forum where women consultants in IMC USA get to know each other and get support in order to achieve their goals for their business and life.

Meetings take place on the first Thursday of each month on Zoom at 2 PM PDT / 5 PM Eastern. Meetings will last for one hour and, if the host is available, may stay open on Zoom for additional time as needed.

The meeting begins with introductions or elevator pitches, in which women state their name, location and consulting practice area. In addition the facilitator may ask everyone to answer a specific question (example: "What made you want to become a consultant?").

After introductions, each member has the opportunity to ask a question they need answered or describe a situation or issue for which they need help, support and/or solutions. Other attendees may ask clarifying questions and then the group provides answers, solutions, ideas, etc. to help the member.

To become a member and attend the online meetings, please request to join this group. Upon approval, you will receive announcements and invitations for the group.

wrote on the Community Subgroups: Women Consultants Group wall: Summary of 1st Women’s Consultants Group meeting on Thursday, April 4, 2019, at 5 P.M. Eastern. The group did introductions including name, location and consulting practice area and then opened up to the issue discussion format. One member had 3 minutes to describe her issue about being asked by a startup to provide strategic consulting for a new business launch. The consultant had provided specific assessment projects for mature companies but never consulted with a start up. The group members had 3 minutes to ask clarifying questions be providing possible solutions . After clarifying questions, a lively discussion ensued, in which many solutions were suggested, including proposing a base monthly retainer with an allowance for charging additional hours or an option to get an equity position in the startup. A member pointed out that because 1 in 10 startups fail, the equity amount should be at least 10 times what one would charge in fees.
