IMC a Key Ingredient to This Member's Success

IMC member Rudy Miick, CMC, recently got the kind of press every consultant dreams of, when Inc. Magazine ran a feature story on one of his clients, Nick Sarillo, and his Chicago-area pizza restaurants. In the article, titled "Lessons from a Blue Collar Millionaire”, Sarillo shares his 10 "key ingredients” for building a successful company culture. Sarillo’s sixth tip, titled "A consultant can be more helpful than you think”, focused on Sarillo’s relationship with Miick, which started in 2003, and offers some impressive numbers to quantify Miick’s value to Sarillo’s organization. Miick describes his business, which focuses on the restaurant industry, as working with companies to determine "how do we create a ‘we’”? Miick explains, "A few constructs guide Miick and Associates when we engage with a client: first, we ask ‘how have we been of value to you today?’ We always strive to be an investment, not an expense to the client. Second, we always strive to be a partner. We ask ‘how do we be a guide, not just a coach?’ Our sweet spot is creating high-performing culture. We strive to model values as opposed to strictly creating policies. A coach stands on the boundaries. A coach can’t change the rules and can’t call the game. The coach can’t really play. A guide, on the other hand, climbs the Himalayas with you. The guide teaches you, climbs with you, but you carry your own gear. We want to be your guide - we will get you to the summit and we will get you back home alive”, Miick says, using his mountain-climbing hobby as a metaphor for his consulting work.

A member of the Colorado IMC chapter, Miick is enthusiastic about the support he receives from the IMC community. Miick belongs to a few other professional organizations and says "IMC is a supporting community as opposed to a competitive place, like some of the other groups I belong to. People share ideas and brainstorm… there is a real sense of mutual respect and inquiry and a desire to help each other improve. The community is all about learning and applying new ideas. I feel 100% comfortable calling other CMCs and bouncing ideas off of them. I have been inspired to have ongoing dialogues about consulting work. I don’t have that in other professional organizations. Throughout the engagement with Nick Sarillo’s company, IMC relationships have been very valuable to me.”

Miick was also very pleased with the process of getting his CMC designation. "The people who took me through the CMC were serious. The process was adhered to; it was strict. The depth of questions, the complexity of the inquiry was impressive. I just loved that. I came away with an appreciation of all the stuff I forgot I knew and an appreciation for the certification process itself. I got an appreciation for the field of management consulting and my colleagues. And I got an appreciation of the high level where CMCs perform.”
