Technology is a strategy that many organizations are perplexed about spending time and money to develop and we underestimated what it required to make this successful. This World Strategy Week event will give participants new and intimate insight to when, why and expected impact of selecting the right technology to achieve your goals.
Our speakers, Dr. Norman Chervany, Carlson School of Management, University of Minnesota and Richard Ziegler, Chief Strategy Officer and Founder Alliance Professional Group, will discuss the issues that executives and their advisors should consider while making strategic investments in technology for sustainability or growth. They will discuss this problem by looking at the culture, economics, and the capacity for an organization to create a competitive advantage by investing in technology.
Norman L. Chervany
Norman is the Carlson Professor of Information and Decision Sciences in the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota. He joined the faculty in September 1967. Prior to joining the Carlson School, he received a BS in Mathematics from the University of Mount Union and an MBA and DBA from Indiana University.
Norm’s teaching and research interests focus on the human and organizational issues involved in the successful use of information technology. These interests are predicated on the “fact” that most of the struggles … if not outright failures … in information- technology-centered applications and innovations can be traced to mistakes made by organizations and their people. In pursuing this focus, Norm has studied a number of topics, including (a) the relationship between organizational strategy and information technology, (b) the information technology implementation process, (c) information technology and the design of work, and (d) management of the information services function.
Norm has taught in the Carlson School’s BS, MBA, and PhD programs. This teaching includes extensive teaching in the Carlson School’s Executive International MBA Programs in Minneapolis, Warsaw, Vienna, and most recently in Guangzhou, China. He has also taught in a large number of the Carlson School’s Executive Education Programs. The typical course offered in the International MBA and Executive Education Programs is entitled “Information Technology and Strategy”.
Norm is widely published in a large number of professional journals, including Management Science, Decision Sciences, The Journal of the ACM, and the Academy of Management Journal.
Richard E. Ziegler
Richard's 25 years in consulting began as a Financial, Economic, and Market Analyst, and advanced to Senior Vice President levels and a voting seat on the Executive Committee of an international consulting firm. Richard's corporate functional responsibilities included Strategic Planning, Business Planning, Strategic Marketing, Business Development Management, and Budgeting. With a vision and passion for creating his own company, Richard started Ziegler & Associates, LLC in 1998 and that later became Alliance Professional Group, LLC. in 2003
Richard's work over the last 15 years has given him first hand experience with government agencies such as HUD, the FDIC and the Federal Reserve, Congressionally chartered firms for profit like Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae, and the Department of Defense. Private sector clients have included local, regional, and even international Fortune 100's.
Richard's work is spread evenly between the government and private sectors. Federal government work includes DoD consulting and facilitation primarily in the management, fielding and sustainment training, and organizational interfaces with Management Information Systems (MIS). In 1999, Richard secured, designed, and executed an assessment regarding management utilization of the MIS for the Army Materiel Command MWR Commercial Activities. After praise by Army Auditors (AAA), this lead to a worldwide engagement that spanned the continental USA, the Pacific, Korea, and Europe. This has led to additional assignments preparing reorganization assessments of departments with worldwide responsibilities, and other organizational work such as Joint Services Charter Development for MWR IT Army, Navy, Marine Corp, and Air Force. Our work not only includes quantitative assessments and analysis, but also high-level facilitations and briefings before Department Heads and BoD Generals.
