Disruption happens. Forecasting future trends is becoming increasingly more difficult. The application of artificial intelligence to business processes and financial instability are major examples of disruption. Disruptive change causes uncertainty. However, there are opportunities during times of uncertainty. Consultants, especially Certified Management Consultants®, are uniquely qualified to provide an understanding of the current environment in which many organizations operate.
The future is uncertain…but this uncertainty is at the very heart of human creativity.
— Ilya Prigogine
Uncertainty is a feeling of not knowing what will happen. It results when there is unknown information about a situation or event. Uncertain times are periods when what will happen in the future becomes more difficult to predict or even unpredictable.
Leadership is Essential in Times of Uncertainty
Uncertainty can cause pressure, anxiety, and defensiveness in an organization. Leadership is an essential element during times of uncertainty to manage uncertainty inside the organization and to adopt strategy for responses to the external environment.
Thinking beyond self or detaching oneself and the team from automatic emotional responses is important to analyzing and responding to uncertainty. Attempt to identify what is known or certain about the issues or conditions which impact your specific situation.
Focus on What You and Your Client Can Control
Viewing uncertainty as a general problem does not isolate those things which can be controlled locally versus those issues which are beyond such control. Focusing on what is within your and your client’s span of control is essential. Find practical options for developing short and long-term strategies.
Increase Communication in Times of Uncertainty
Most importantly, increasing communication about actions being taken and desired strategic outcomes can be an effective tool for relieving anxiety. Remember to be open-minded and adaptable. Embracing the uncertainty as opposed to resisting it will lead to better outcomes.
Nimble, Resilient Organizations Can Adapt
The marketplace can transform quickly because participants are differently equipped to deal with disruption, depending on their status and relative position in the marketplace. Nimble organizations may be able to move quickly and lean into the change to seize available opportunities. Less resilient organizations may lose market share or position because of their inability or reluctance to change.
