International Consultants Day is an annual observance held on the first Thursday of June to celebrate the global profession of management consultants and highlight their impact on societies, businesses, and economies. Established by the International Council of Management Consulting Institutes in 2005, it’s an opportunity for consultants and their institutes and organizations to reflect on the profession’s achievements and to remind clients of the benefits of engaging consultants.
As we reflect on International Consultants Day, we should consider ways management consultants offer leadership to the profession and our clients, especially under current conditions.
The Need for Greater Client Guidance in Complex Times
Several organizations including the U.S. Federal Reserve System, International Monetary Fund and Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, forecast that global economic growth in the current year is expected to slow compared to the recent past, citing causes that include higher U.S. tariffs, geopolitical tensions, and resulting uncertainty. Trade and debt challenges may also play a factor in various regions.
In past messages we discussed some of the challenges organizations face today: the impact of technology disruption, AI, automation and advanced data analytics, workforce recruitment and retention issues, and the future of work, specifically, the transition to a hybrid workplace. The economic environment and workplace are in a state of flux.
The Increased Power of Consulting Partnerships
In this climate, the necessity for management consultants to provide advice to facilitate a client’s analysis of internal and external challenges and achievement of objectives is even more pronounced. An effective tool in the management consultant’s toolbox is partnerships. Formal alliances or collaborating with other management consultants, who share their values, can be a force multiplier and can serve to benefit consultants and clients in the long-term.
Leverage Consulting Partnerships to Expand Capability
Management consultants can use partnerships with other consultants or firms to leverage their own services and client relationships to expand reach and capability, diversify knowledge bases, services or share resources, which will enhance outcomes for the client.
For management consultants this type of collaboration can include accessing new markets and clients in different geographic or practice areas. It can take the form of engaging other consultants with specialized knowledge, skills and advanced technologies by offering integrated solutions as a one-stop shop.
Benefits can be sharing or distributing risks related to new projects or ventures, while developing a reputation and credibility in a specific area of expertise. There are various ways for management consultants to show leadership during times of uncertainty. Leveraging partnerships for sustained growth is one option.

Our clients depend on us for leadership and guidance to show them how to approach challenges, and the way to navigate through difficult economic times. As the world changes so too should our perspectives and approach to the practice of management consulting.
