The Value Proposition: What’s In It For Me?

by | Aug 5, 2025 | Message from the Chair | 1 comment

A value proposition typically refers to the value delivered to the customer. It is a concise statement that seeks to explain the unique benefits and value a product or service offers. The concept is thought to have first appeared in a McKinsey staff paper written by Michael Lanning and Edward Michaels entitled “A Business is a Value Delivery System” in 1988. Today the term has broad applicability beyond business.

Elements of a Successful Value Proposition

A value proposition in the context of a non-profit professional association describes the unique benefits members and potential members receive, articulating why they should join or continue their membership. The value proposition should answer the question, “What is in it for me?” for the prospective member. It is different from the mission statement as it focuses on the specific benefits members receive.

An ideal value proposition for a professional association in 2025 should have various elements. The items should include opportunities for networking and business development, professional development and skills enhancement, specialization and potentially niche development, advocacy and representation, and the ability to be exposed to, interact, and collaborate with, like-minded professionals who are practicing in diverse areas of the marketplace.

IMC USA’s Value Proposition

The Institute of Management Consultants (IMC) USA offers a strong value proposition through the overall community or network of members, professional development opportunities and the globally recognized Certified Management Consultant (CMC®) credential. The opportunities to collaborate, share knowledge and grow professionally while increasing skills and upholding high ethical standards can add value to the development and growth of experienced and new management consultants.

Consultants Active in IMC USA Reap Benefits

Members play a crucial role in enhancing the value proposition by actively taking part in IMC USA. Getting engaged by volunteering or seeking leadership positions, sharing knowledge and networking with members, promoting the organization and mentoring or supporting others are current opportunities and effective means to get engaged.

By actively participating, providing feedback, and contributing, members directly enhance the benefits of membership and strengthen the position of the organization as a valuable resource for its members and the industry, all of which adds to the benefit of every active participant. Let’s celebrate the good work of IMC USA members and the opportunities to grow through affiliation, participation, and engagement.
